Grains are a commonly eaten food since time immemorial. Today, grains have been made into a variety of processed foods and are commonly eaten as pasta, oatmeal, pastry, cereal, wheat meal and many more. 

Despite its popularity, however, the truth and myth about grains is still an ongoing debate. While some people believe, the health benefits of grains are exaggerated; many others feel it is a healthy food source. This only complicates issues as it still leaves many confused which is why the truth about grains will be revealed to you today.

Whole grains or refined grains?

It is believed by many that whole grains are unhealthy and refined grains should be eaten instead. But that is a big fat lie. It is, in fact, the opposite. 

When you eat whole grains you get to eat all the part of the grain including the bran, germ, and endosperm. This way you enjoy all the dietary benefits it has to offer. Whole grains are not only rich in dietary fiber but equally rich in minerals and vitamins. 

On the other hand, it is advised you avoid refined or processed grains. They contain little or no nutrients and what they have as nutrients are usually additives. So stick with eating brown rice and whole wheat bread. 

Some grains contain gluten, not all

Many people with celiac disease or rather gluten intolerance have carried on with the notion that all grains contain gluten. That is so untrue. Grains such as corn, millet, sorghum, and rice are all gluten-free. 

However, there are some wheat and oats products which have been made both gluten-free and with health benefits. 

Eat whole grains to lose weight

Eating whole grains is one of the best ways to lose weight. They keep your stomach full which means you will feel less hungry in return. The reason for this is simply that whole grains are digested slowly in the body. 

If you are trying to lose weight or maintain a normal BMI, you should include whole grains in your diet. 

Whole grains are a good food source for Diabetic Patients

Whole grains which are a good source of dietary fiber have been shown by studies to slow down the absorption of glucose in the body. This way it keeps both blood sugar levels as well as insulin level normal. 

Eating whole grains will help to reduce your risk of cancer

Whole grains contain an antioxidant known as phytic acid. Studies have shown that this antioxidant fights cancer cells in the body reducing your risk of cancer drastically. 

However, you should avoid eating too much of whole grains at once as phytic acid could act as a toxin when in a higher dose in the body.
