Low Carb Diet: FAT OR FICTION?
Do you want to lose some body fat? Then you may be considering a low carb diet as an option already. But you may be wondering, what is its success rate? The low carb diet has been labeled by many as extreme and fictitious. While others attest that it works wonders. I bet you can't even separate the fact from fiction? Well, let’s find out what is really true and what is fiction.
What is a low carb diet?
The low carb diet popularly called the Atkins diet, or the ketogenic diet is simply eating less than 40 grams of carbohydrate per day. Be it bread, pasta, rice, and even potatoes. It is believed that the body burns fat for energy instead of carbs when you cut back on your sugar and carbohydrate intake. This makes it a fast weight loss diet or so they say.
The low carb diet, however, allows you to eat a high-fat diet if you so wish. How ironical. It is said that a low carb diet is easier to stick to than a low-fat diet and this has made it gain further popularity today.
Is the low carb diet best for weight loss?
Dr. Atkins started the low carb diet in 1970. According to him, carbs were the main culprits causing weight gain and not fats as you have been made to believe. Some recent studies have also revealed that when carbohydrates are stored in the body as glucose, it results in increased blood sugar levels. This increased blood sugar levels then contributes to obesity in return.
However, some recent studies also claim that the low carb diet is fictitious and doesn't help in weight loss. Some even went further to state that, the low carb diet is unhealthy. But the question remains, are all carbs bad? No. Whole grains remain a healthy source of carbohydrate. They, in fact, are great for weight loss.
What's the low carb diet success rate?
The low carb diet is becoming more and more popular today as many people attest already that it works for weight loss. A recent study led by a team of researchers from McMaster University also revealed that people who eat low amounts of carbs have a lower mortality rate compared to those who eat a higher amount of carbs. The study which was conducted to show how diets affect health and mortality showed that people who ate a high-fat diet had a lower mortality rate by 23% compared to those on a low-fat diet. This is the license you need to start the low carb diet.
In other words, the low carb diet is not fiction, it is, in fact, the winning diet for fat loss.
